This company is just the worst. Their $200 coffee maker relies entirely on an app, but they’ve gone and disabled it to stop folks from buying or selling their used or refurbished items. It’s just ridiculous to think any business would do something like this. Can you imagine if Apple or Samsung designed their phones to prevent you from selling them when you upgrade? Just shameful.

Edit: After I shared this review, I received a bunch of emails from Behmor that made it even clearer how clueless they are. They tried to twist my Apple/Samsung analogy, claiming that letting their coffee maker work when resold would be like a used phone coming with free service and a warranty. That’s just nonsense. Nobody expects a warranty from the original maker when buying secondhand, but they also don’t expect the manufacturer to disable it. Sure, you can still brew the maximum amount on default settings, but you can’t adjust anything and have to make the full 8 cups every single time. Behmor restricts you from any real controls since you can’t register for the app. If they think, unlike every other company, that the app’s functionality is akin to free cell service, then they should charge for it but give new buyers a code for free access. Back to the phone example, if I grab a used iPhone, I still have access to the app store, “Find my iPhone,” iMessage, Safari, and Apple Pay. The phone works just fine; Apple doesn’t block that.

In the end, they seem to think I’m really upset about getting a coffee maker that doesn’t work as it should... that’s not it at all, I got my refund. The real reason I won’t buy from Behmor again is that I now realize they’ll make it nearly worthless if I ever want to upgrade and sell my old one. It’s like when video games, music, and movies pull that whole “you don’t really own this, just a license to use it that can’t be transferred and can be revoked anytime” stunt, but with a physical item. A $200 physical item... Honestly, it’s a great deal for how good this coffee maker is supposed to be, but it’s a shame it comes from a company that makes cable providers look generous and caring in comparison.
